The Don Sweeney era has officially begun - and it was nothing short of a horror film.

The Bruins dropped their home opener to the Winnipeg Jets 6-2 Thursday night. Despite coming out to a quick start when David Krejci ripped one past Winnipeg goaltender Ondrej Pavelec. The Jets responded with three second period goals to take a stranglehold on the game, including a goal by Blake Wheeler that came off of a Matt Irwin turnover.

David Pastrnak would get one back off a feed from new Bruin Matt Beleskey to bring the Bruins within a goal, before the Jets would take control again, scoring two more goals to bury the Bruins and then added a 180 foot empty net goal with three minutes left of the game to add insult to injury.

Tuukka Rask had an uncharacteristic night between the pipes for the black and gold, ending the night with 26 saves in 31 shots. The Jets buried Rask with 24 shots before taking a 5-3 lead, eventually digging a hole that the Bruins simply could not escape from.

One of the major concerns for the Bruins is their mishandling of the puck, leading to turnovers and eventual Jets goals. The Jets played on the inexperienced Bruins defence, making them pay for any mistakes they made in front of the net.

Despite dropping their opening game, the Bruins are left with a good snapshot of things they need to improve on before their rivals the Montreal Canadiens come to town. The Bruins are sporting a young defence corps without captain Zdeno Chara and Dennis Seidenberg manning the backline, and are forced to look for a new identity after many roster changes highlight the summer, including the departure of Milan Lucic to the L.A. Kings.

The Bruins will have to clean up their act when the Montreal Canadiens comes to town Saturday night. Puck drops at 7p.m. at TD Garden.
